    WPA Historical Survey: Somerset, built in 1853, is located about six miles north of Stafford Courthouse off Route 636. Slavery The orginial Somerset house was built by John Moncure, and was a frame structure built by slave labor. Mr. Moncure owned between fifty and seventy-five slaves. The last of the old slaves, Jim Hedgeman, was eight-five years old.
